CHAMPION RETURNS TO COACH
WAHT ARE YOU GOING TO DO NOW, COACH?
Everyone was anxious to see who would be there, so they arrived early at their alma mater.
They were all about to see old friends at the Elio Fontana Field under Madden Lights. John Madden, '54, donated big $$$ to put the lights on Jeff's field for these night games.
Sally Rasmussen Leogrande, the organizer of the '81 reunion, introduces daughter, Stephanie, to 1983 grad Angelo Koulakis.
The four coaches for the new varsity are all Jeff grads. Here one of our fine athletes from the early 70s (and I will locate his name) puts the team through their paces.
Ako Poti, '83 grad gets the team ready as darkness covers the field. No, not darkness, Madden Lights!
Many roles of the Fokin siblings. Archie, Student Body President of '86, poses with Jeff teacher Helena Fokin, a '70 grad. Archie was a star athlete and Helena was his biggest fan. She is his sister.
Alfonso Bocanegra, '84, with his wife Diana Lopez, '86, find a place in the stands. The game is about to begin.
Jim Caruso,'60, has been going to Jeff games since he was a little kid. He and his wife Sharon Warren, '62, were big fans from 1975 thru 1984 when their sons played football. AND they can often be seen at the games in this century.
Sally greets Danice Pokorny, '81, with her mom and kids. Mrs. Pokorny was very popular with Jefferson students when her kids were at Jeff, especially the Brisbane group.
Edwin Dunkley came with his dad. Edwin played on the 1979 first Varisty Championship Team. His dad and I were often there--Edwin was one of my Woodrow kids.
It has been a long time since Woodrow for all of us. Robert Reyes was a Woodrow kid, too. We spent a lot of time with "remember when" stories. It was great!
Robert Reyes, '86, brought his sons. Robert had tickets to the reunion, but he didn't show. It was good to see him at the game.
Thad Gill and Norman Abulencia are both '81 grads. Norman played on the first Championship football team as a sophomore. He was a great running back. Later they played football together, but Thad's love was basketball.
Cedric Jenkins, '82, is surprised to learn that Eloy Lucero, '80, and Sally were great pals long before Jefferson. Their friendship goes back to Woodrow Wilson days.
Everyone was so busy "catching up" that it appeared that no one was watching, but they all knew when to cheer for the Blue and Gold.
George DeBono, '83, remembers his great football years and a good game is a good game. Plenty of time for old friends after this play.
Time for a few "remember when" stories from these great athletes who all played together on one team or another when they were at Jeff.
Vilma Mixco, '81, remembered what to do. You got up and ran around to see who else was at the game. Here she found Mike Pasco and Angelo Koulakis both of 1983.
It's OK, it's the end of the third quarter and we're winning!
Thad and his cell phone go together like bees and honey. He's either working or making plans for after the game.
I never have trouble getting a Jeff football team to stop for pictures. When they win a big one, it's even easier.
Mike is a '75 grad and we go back a long way. Mike was the rec director at Woodrow before he started teaching. We're sure glad he decided to return to Jeff this year.
Bob had such a good time at the game that he came for the reunion, too. It is so much fun to see your "kids" all grown up.
Sally stops for a picture with Coach Ed Mixco, '76, and his sister Vilma, '81. Ed used to tried to crash their parties, but we always made him stay upstairs with the old folk. He always came back, so we must have treated him well.
Ako Poti's time at Jeff were the CCS Championship years. Cedric was the photographer. Sally was the fan and hostess at their after the game dinners. That was 1983.
"I'm going to that REUNION!"
See those pictures in the next scrapbook.
